Classic Turkey Dressing

A holiday favorite made easy.

No Thanksgiving dinner feels quite complete without a generous serving of savory Classic Turkey Dressing! This easy recipe combines stuffing mix with tender celery, sautéed onion, butter, and aromatic herbs to create a comforting side dish that tastes like the holidays should.

My preference is Pepperidge Farm stuffing mix, seasoned with Bell’s Seasoning, a classic New England blend of herbs and spices that brings wonderful flavor to the table. Chicken or vegetable stock adds moisture, while a lightly beaten egg helps bind everything together for a satisfying texture.

Best of all, you don't need to stuff a turkey to enjoy delicious homemade dressing. Simply prepare the mixture, transfer it to a baking dish, and let the oven do the rest. It's an easy, dependable addition to your Thanksgiving feast or any special dinner featuring roast turkey.

Tip: Add the chicken stock gradually until the stuffing mixture is moist but not mushy. And be sure to let the mixture cool slightly before stirring in the beaten egg. That way, the egg won't begin cooking before your dressing reaches the oven!

Serve this Classic Turkey Dressing warm alongside roast turkey, gravy, and your favorite holiday sides for a traditional meal everyone will love.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (half a stick)

  • 3 celery stalks, chopped

  • ½ white onion, chopped

  • 1 bag stuffing mix (my preference is Pepperidge Farm)

  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable stock (or more, as needed)

  • 1 ½ teaspoons Bell's Seasoning (Bell's is a spice blend, made in New England, that includes dried rosemary, oregano, sage, ginger, marjoram, thyme, and pepper. You can also substitute Herbs de Provence.)

  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

Instructions

  • Melt butter in a sauce pan.

  • Gently sauté chopped celery and onions in the melted butter until tender.

  • Add the stuffing mix to the pan, along with chicken stock, until the mixture is moist but not mushy.

  • Add the seasonings.

  • Remove the sauce pan from heat, and let the mixture cool slightly before adding the beaten egg–the trick is that the mixture needs to be cooled enough so the egg doesn’t cook.

  • Transfer the mixture to a 9"x13" glass baking dish.

  • Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 30-35 minutes.

Enjoy!
